Sarah's Garden

((Words and music by Jeff Olmsted)
Sarah Edwards was sought after as a spiritual counselor and herbalist. She ran the farm, and raised eleven children.
Mr. Edwards builds the kingdom
We are the branches, Christ is the vine
But if there is such a thing as a queendom
Then my garden is mine

I grow harmony in my garden
So that God’s beauty may be revealed.
I grow medicine in my garden
So that our suffering might be healed.

For the children’s burns and bruises
Chickweed makes a healing balm
When my husband’s over-anxious
Rose of Sharon keeps him calm

Mayflower and Salem Waxweed
Decorate my kitchen door
Patience makes an excellent gargle
And will stop a bleeding sore

I grow harmony in my garden
So that God’s beauty may be revealed.
I grow medicine in my garden
So that our suffering might be healed.

Sweetbriar is a missionary
Spreading redness everywhere
Pitcher plant, columbine, evening primrose
My God’s fragrance in the air

Eglantine roses climb my fences
Like my pray’rs climb the sky
The rosy tea aids digestion.
Mr. Edwards keeps a supply.

And I have a wifely way of easing melancholy,
And thus, my husband planted a garden in me.

That’s all

Mother grows harmony in her garden
So that God’s beauty may be revealed.
Mother grows medicine in her garden
So that our suffering might be healed.
